WHISTLER AREA
The journey from Vancouver to Whistler, British Columbia winds along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, one of the most spectacular stretches of road in North America. In less than two hours you have arrived at Canada's premier, year-round resort destination and increasingly, a popular spot for vacation homebuyers, both locally and from around the world...
No matter the season, Whistler has something for everyone — a dynamic mix of outdoor adventure activities, lively events and entertainment, international cuisine and vibrant nightlife, arts and cultural experiences, and a myriad of accommodation choices from quaint pensions to five-star hotels.
Whistler—which owes its name to the distinctive whistle of the hoary marmot - can trace its roots as a resort back to 1914 when pioneers Myrtle and Alex Phillip operated Rainbow Lodge, a summer fishing camp, in what was then known as Alta Lake.
To this day, Whistler's history of excellence continues. It was the opening of Whistler Mountain in 1966 followed by Blackcomb Mountain in 1980 that put Whistler on the map as an alpine destination. The accolades and awards followed for the impressive side-by-side mountains rising a mile above the Village and Valley. The magnitude and variety of terrain has set Whistler apart from other resorts, and keeps skiers and riders coming back again and again.
Every year Whistler seems to offer something new, bigger and better. December 2008 saw the opening of the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola—the world's longest (3.024 kilometres/2 miles) and highest (415 metres/1,361 feet) unsupported lift linking the summits of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains in just 11 minutes.
A $600 million upgrade to the 100 kilometre (72 mile) stretch of the Sea-to-Sky Highway (Highway 99) from Horseshoe Bay means getting to Whistler Resort is now faster, easier and safer. A six-year project that was completed just in time for Whistler to welcome the world as the site of the alpine and Nordic venues for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which was held between February 12 and March 21, 2010.
Whistler is the destination of choice for a lifetime of experiences. Repeatedly voted the number one ski resort in North America, Whistler is a top choice for vacation real estate and property investment.
